Key UK VAT Facts

  • Registration threshold: £90,000 taxable turnover over any rolling 12 months (since April 2024)
  • Return deadline: 1 month and 7 days after your VAT period ends, for both filing and payment
  • Making Tax Digital: mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses; returns must be filed through MTD-compatible software
  • Late filing: penalty points per late return; at 4 points (quarterly filers) HMRC issues a £200 fine
